Abstract

Agriculture has been the backbone of human society, being the main source of food, fiber, and raw materials for centuries. From early subsistence farming in its formative stages to its current industrialized forms, agriculture has been transformed deep down to mirror improvements in technology, science, and socio-economic arrangements. This research paper discusses the historical development of agriculture, different agricultural systems and practices, and how contemporary technologies like biotechnology, precision agriculture, and sustainable agriculture come into play. It also discusses the importance of soil, water, and crop management in maintaining productivity, followed by an analysis of environmental impacts such as loss of biodiversity, loss of forests, and greenhouse gas emissions.
