Al-Jihad fi al-Islam by Abul A'la Maududi presents a comprehensive study of the concept, principles, and practical application of Jihad in Islam. The author emphasizes that Jihad is not limited to armed struggle but includes all efforts against oppression, injustice, and moral corruption, in accordance with Islamic teachings. The book explores historical examples from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Rashidun Caliphate, including the Conquest of Makkah, the Battle of Badr, and campaigns against apostate tribes, illustrating the ethical and societal dimensions of Jihad. Maududi also critically addresses the misconceptions propagated by Orientalist scholars such as D. S. Margoliouth, William Muir, T. W. Arnold, and Reinhart Dozy, clarifying that Islam’s concept of Jihad is primarily reformative and moral, not aggressive or imperialistic. Finally, the book emphasizes the importance of ethical conduct, social reform, and the establishment of justice as core objectives of Jihad, highlighting Islam’s vision for a just and peaceful society.
