Abstract

This essay explores the theme of identity crisis and cultural displacement in the book, The Namesake (2003) by Jhumpa Lahiri by using the critical framework of the theory of diaspora by analyzing the dynamics between migration, belonging and cultural identity interrelations. The research adopts a qualitative textual analysis approach, and explores how Lahiri uses the relocation of the Ganguli family in Calcutta to the US to inform about psychological, emotional and cultural aspects of immigrant life. The analysis presupposes the relevance of the name Gogol Ganguli as a multifaceted signifier of dislocation, estrangement, and hybrid subjectivity, and looks at the first-generational nostalgia of Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, the clash between permanence and assimilation, and the importance of food and domestic rituals as signs of cultural continuity. The paper uses the ideas and theories of Stuart Hall conceptualization of cultural identity, theory of the third space by Homi K. Bhabha and other postcolonial and diaspora studies frameworks in the argument that Lahiri reflects on the diasporic identity or state as a fluid, changing and never static or transformative constructions of memory, place, naming practices and intergenerational inheritance. The results indicate that The Namesake expresses the existence of a liminal space between cultures where characters resist, adjust and eventually reconstruct selfhood through continual cultural negotiation. The present research is an addition to the academic discourse on South Asian American diaspora fiction and identity formation due to postcolonialism.
