This study investigates the supervisory feedback process in the development of research skills among postgraduate students. Feedback is conceptualized not merely as an evaluative or corrective tool, but as a key pedagogical mechanism that facilitates intellectual development, critical thinking, and the formation of an academic identity. The process is inherently dynamic and complex, shaped by the interaction between supervisor and student. A qualitative research design was adopted to explore the intricate and relational nature of supervisory feedback. Ethical approval was obtained, and participant confidentiality was strictly maintained. Using convenient sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 faculty members and 40 postgraduate students at the University of Okara. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring patterns and themes within the data. The findings revealed that supervisor feedback plays a significant role in shaping students’ academic growth, independent thinking, and emotional well-being. Timely, clear, and constructive feedback enabled students to understand expectations, develop their ideas, and remain engaged in the research process. It also fostered critical thinking and self-direction, supporting the transition from guided learners to confident researchers. A key affective dimension also emerged. Positive and respectful feedback enhanced students’ confidence, strengthened the supervisor-student relationship, and encouraged open scholarly dialogue. These results underscore feedback as a powerful factor in postgraduate research development.
