Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between Sufi epistemology and South Asian aesthetic experience by examining South Asian Music and contemporary miniature painting as complementary modes of spiritual inquiry. Drawing upon the concepts of rasa, noor, ishq, fana, and the progressive purification of the nafs, the study explores how artistic experience can move beyond sensory perception toward heightened states of consciousness, contemplation, and spiritual realization. The research brings together the experiential orientation of Sufi thought with the South Asian aesthetic conception of rasa, understood as an intensified form of aesthetic relish associated with transcendence, inner harmony, self-realization, and spiritual bliss. It further examines how musical concentration, tonal and rhythmic immersion, colour, abstraction, spatial dissolution, and material processes may function as vehicles for negotiating the relationship between the tangible and the intangible. The study adopts a comparative, practice-led and interpretive approach, connecting the spiritual dimensions of South Asian Music with the visual language of contemporary miniature painting, particularly through the artwork The Lamp of Passion. Rather than treating music and painting as isolated artistic disciplines, the paper proposes that both can operate as embodied forms of knowledge in which artistic practice facilitates an inward movement from ordinary perception toward contemplative experience. The analysis suggests that the dialogue between rasa and noor provides a productive framework for understanding South Asian spiritual aesthetics and demonstrates how contemporary artistic practice can reactivate traditional metaphysical concepts within evolving cultural contexts.
