Abstract

The explosion of digitally mediated spaces has dramatically transformed the attentional capabilities, learning methods, and emotional regulation of adolescents. An extensive array of studies has investigated the cognitive and behavioral impacts of digital media consumption; however, this literature has been predominately quantitative in nature, outcome-focused, and conducted in the Western context, with no insight into how the people closest to adolescents – teachers and parents – perceive, understand, and deal with attentional disruptions in everyday practice. The need for such knowledge is particularly pertinent in Karachi, Pakistan, where previous research on adolescent digital media consumption has been conducted using solely cross-sectional surveys considering attention as a constant background factor. This research adopted a descriptive phenomenology design based on the philosophy of Husserl (1931) and methodology of Giorgi (2009) to address this gap by interviewing six participants in Karachi, i.e., three matched pairs of parent-teachers, each set discussing one same adolescent (Student 1: mother and a male teacher; Student 2: father and a female teacher; Student 3: tech-savvy mother and a senior academic), using semi-structured in-depth interviews of 35 to 60 minutes. Data analysis was done using the Giorgi's six step descriptive phenomenological method (holistic reading, bracketing, identification of meaning units, eidetic transformation, thematic clustering and synthesis) using the lens of Attention Economy Theory, Cognitive Load Theory and Ecological Systems Theory. The analysis resulted in four main themes: attentional saturation and cognitive fatigue, attention devoted to entertainment and disengagement from classroom discussion, mediation challenges within the family and school systems and slow but steady changes in emotional and mental health. It conceptualizes adolescent digital attention disorder as a relational and culturally contingent phenomenon and not as a mere cognitive problem and that Karachi parents are not converging to one kind of mediation philosophy with the three families of this study having three different philosophies (restriction, coexistence and negotiated balance).
