The Scholarly Tradition of Critical Notes on Muqaddimah Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ: A Comparative and Critical Study of the Methodologies of al-ʿIrāqī, al-Zarkashī, and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

Abstract

Muqaddimah Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ occupies a central position in the intellectual history of Ḥadīth terminology, as it reorganized a substantial body of earlier dispersed scholarship into a systematic and pedagogically useful framework. Its scholarly prominence generated an extensive tradition of abridgements, versifications, commentaries, and critical notes. The literature of critical notes should not be viewed merely as a collection of objections; rather, it represents a sustained scholarly effort to clarify, qualify, complete, correct, and critically extend Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ’s work. This study comparatively and critically examines three major works: al-ʿIrāqī’s al-Taqyīd wa-l-Īḍāḥ, al-Zarkashī’s al-Nukat ʿalā Muqaddimat Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ, and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī’s al-Nukat ʿalā Kitāb Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ. The main focus is on their aims of authorship, use of sources, methods of quotation and verification, treatment of definitions, critical observations, points of disagreement, and principles of preference. Employing historical, descriptive, analytical, comparative, and critical methods, the study demonstrates that although the three scholars belong to the same critical tradition, their approaches differ significantly according to their respective scholarly specializations. Al-ʿIrāqī is characterized by concise clarification, qualification, verification, and direct correction al-Zarkashī by juristic, legal-theoretical, linguistic, and expansive analysis and Ibn Ḥajar by Ḥadīth-based, biographical, isnād-oriented, and applied criticism. The study concludes that the abundance of critical-note literature does not reflect a weakness in Muqaddimah Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ; rather, it confirms its centrality, influence, and capacity to generate a dynamic tradition of scholarly criticism.
