Abstract

Sports have increasingly emerged as an important instrument of international diplomacy, social development, peacebuilding, and cooperation. Within this context, the Olympic Movement represents one of the most influential global platforms through which sport can contribute to broader international objectives. This study examines the role of the United Nations (UN) in strengthening sports governance within the Olympic Movement, with particular emphasis on peace promotion, good governance, and international cooperation. The study conceptualizes sports governance as a multidimensional process involving transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, ethical leadership, institutional cooperation, and respect for human rights. It explores how collaboration between the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), national Olympic bodies, governments, and other international stakeholders can enhance the contribution of sport to global peace and sustainable international relations.Particular attention is given to the Olympic Truce as an important example of the intersection between international diplomacy and sport. The Olympic Truce provides a symbolic and institutional framework through which the Olympic Games can promote dialogue, understanding, peaceful coexistence, and the reduction of tensions among nations. The study further considers how the UN's international mandate and the Olympic Movement's universal reach can complement one another in addressing contemporary governance challenges in sport. Issues including institutional accountability, gender equality, non-discrimination, youth participation, ethical conduct, safeguarding, and the peaceful resolution of disputes are considered as essential dimensions of effective sports governance. The study adopts a qualitative conceptual approach based on an analysis of relevant international policy frameworks, institutional documents, academic literature, and established principles of sports governance. The analysis suggests that stronger UN–Olympic cooperation can provide a valuable framework for improving governance practices while expanding the social and diplomatic impact of major sporting events. At the same time, effective collaboration requires clear institutional responsibilities, greater transparency, meaningful stakeholder participation, and consistent implementation of ethical standards. The study argues that the Olympic Games should not be viewed solely as elite sporting competitions but also as opportunities for advancing international dialogue and shared global values. The findings highlight the potential of coordinated sports governance to support peacebuilding and strengthen international cooperation. By connecting Olympic values with the broader objectives of the United Nations, sport can contribute to a governance environment that encourages mutual respect, social inclusion, peaceful engagement, and cooperation across national boundaries. The study concludes that a more integrated relationship between international sports institutions and the UN can strengthen the Olympic Movement's capacity to serve as a platform for peace, responsible governance, and international solidarity. Such an approach can enhance the legitimacy and social relevance of sports governance while reinforcing the wider contribution of sport to a more peaceful and cooperative world.
