Abstract

The teachings of Islam play a vital role in refining and developing human personality. Among these teachings, self-accountability (Muhasabah al-Nafs) holds a central position. It is regarded as a fundamental means of spiritual growth, moral purification, and practical reform. The Holy Qur’an urges الإنسان to evaluate his actions, adopt piety, and remain conscious of accountability in the Hereafter. Allah Almighty states: “O you who believe! Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow.” Similarly, the Prophetic traditions emphasize self-accountability as a key principle for a believer’s success and salvation. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The wise person is the one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death.” This study analytically examines the concept of self-accountability, its types, and its impact on both individual and collective life. Furthermore, it explores this concept in the light of modern psychological theories to highlight its practical significance. The study concludes that self-accountability is not only a means of inner reform but also plays a pivotal role in building a balanced, morally sound, and responsible society.
